I scored my first movie last year, a 51-minute feature documentary about 19th century author–George MacDonald. I thought it might be fun for those of you aspiring to do film scores to get a peek at some of the techniques I used in the film, especially things pertaining to the use of acoustic guitar to produce very un-guitar-like sound effects.
This isn’t going to tell you all you need to know in order to score a film, and it’s not meant to. It’s just a glance at the process. But hopefully you might get some inspiration for using acoustic guitar more in your own film projects.
Almost all of the music used in this movie is taken from the film – “The Mystical World of George MacDonald”. You can watch the entire film here at YouTube. Look for it in my playlists. I did, however, use one tune from my CD – Pardon My Guitar. The track used was called – “Flamingo Joe” (a pun on ‘flamenco’ music). It can be purchased as an MP3 single at music retailors all over the web including Amazon, CDBaby, iTunes etc.

A simply beautiful piece from Loreena McKennit. I tried to match the atmosphere on my guitar allthough my arragement is not 100 % faithful to the original. It is in DADGAD played with my favorite Labis guitar and recorded in my camera with an AKG c1000s mike through a preamp (no effects).

“I hope you can help me with my acoustic amplification. I have been playing amplified acoustic nylon string guitar at a few banquets and wedding ceremonies over this past summer. And, I have had poor results overall with amplifying my acoustic guitar. I play a Nylon String Yamaha CGX-171. It has a piezo pickup & a condensor mic with an built-in onboard pre-amp. I have tried playing it through a few rented Fender Acoustic amps; (the Fender Acoustasonic 30), which is a 30 watt amp with an 8 speaker. I also tried renting the Fender Acoustasonic Junior; which is a 40 watt amp with two 8 speakers and I even once rented the Fender Acoustasonic SFX II which is an 80 watt amp and has an 8 driver a tweeter and a 6 side-mount speaker.
While the Fender SFX-II sounded the best out of the bunch – overall the quality of my live sound (to me personally) still does not come across as very full and/or rich sounding. I was wondering if you could go over your acoustic guitar set-up and let me know what gear you use for doing your acoustic guitar gigs.
